Photoshoot

1) Which of your main characters will appear on the front cover of your programme?
The main character who is Natalie played by Sophie will appear on the front cover of my programme.

2) What image or images do you need for the contents page?
I just need individual pictures of the Daniel and Sophie which I will edit for my contents page to make it look more interesting.

3) What image or images will you use for the double-page spread?
I will need and use an image of Sophie looking in another direction but also not at the camera.

4) Write a shot list for the photoshoot. Make sure you plan a variety of camera shots you will look to capture - medium shots, close-ups etc.
  • Medium shots of Sophie looking away, looking at the camera
  • Also, medium close up shots of Sophie
  • Medium and close up shots of the whole group together
  • Close up and Medium shots of each individuals

5) What costume, props or make-up will you require for the photoshoot?
The costume required in the photoshoot would be casual clothing with no props and make up.

Video Production tutorial

·         3 minute rough cut status: 30 seconds delivered currently, more filmed but not yet edited.

·         Comments on current filming: most aspects of continuity editing pretty good but the conversation doesn’t feel natural – the timing isn’t right. Two options here – re-edit and give the conversation a bit more space and time so it feels more natural. Secondly, you could re-shoot the scene, it’s not long and you may well find you significantly improve the shoot having edited the sequence once. Also, be careful with audio levels – they are pretty good for an external scene but any worse would seriously impact on the professional finish of the film and the possibility of a top level mark.

·         If you do re-shoot you should also try and use the 50mm lens to add high quality cinematography to the production (and make it more arthouse too).

·         Other scenes: hospital scene shot. House scene to be filmed this week (be careful of light). Daniel scenes shot but probably same issues as rough cut so worth considering re-shoot there.

·         Re-shoot will need to be this Saturday to allow editing of full 3 minute rough cut for this time next week.

·         Next steps: get everything shot or re-shot by the end of Saturday this week (18 March).
·         Put together a rough rough cut for next Monday’s lesson followed by a pretty strong rough cut (probably only needing audio and minor adjustments) for the following Friday’s lesson.

·         Print – work on this individually in free periods/after school as required.

Script Tutorial

·         Brilliant concept – really intriguing and an excellent idea for a 30-minute arthouse film. Also looks very achievable and I’m confident the audience will quickly get the narrative.
·         The only location that might be tricky is the hospital (although Daniel may come in here!) But if you can film in an actual hospital it will add greatly to the overall effect.
·         The only scene I don’t quite get is the McDonald’s bit – what does it add to the narrative or tell the audience? Will you have music over any of these scenes?
·         A couple of other comments: the script looks a little short for three minutes? Generally the Hollywood rule is one page a minute so in that sense you’re absolutely fine but each scene seems pretty short… it’s not a major concern as it can be a few seconds under no problem (2min 45secs is fine).
·         Finally, the final conversation feels very important but is currently set outside (park) – how will you make sure the audio is good enough here? Also, is it worth adding a couple of lines to this last conversation to hint further at where the film may be going?

Next steps
  •  We are going to take out the irrelevant and unfitting scene where our lead actor goes to Mcdonald's and comes out; it will mislead the audience.
  • Also, with our script being short, we thought of adding more lines when we acting so it can be a little longer
  • Lastly, we thought to make our film look more creative and professional with the different variety of shot types and angles.

British film industry : Institutional context

3) What is the 'cultural test' to see if a film counts as British?
The cultural test is a test for British movies to score 16 or more points out of 31 points to be classifed as a British film. The cultural test is divided into 4 sections which are Cultural context, cultural contribution, cultural hubs and cultural practitioners.

4) Complete the task on the Factsheet, researching the films listed and finding out what they score on the cultural test: Sweeney, Attack The Block, The King's Speech, We Need To Talk About Kevin and Skyfall.
Image result for the sweeney cultural test score
1) The Sweeney
The financing came from Euston films and Thames television.

They received money from BBC films, footprint investment and Piccadily pictures.
The cultural test score for this movie is 22 out of 31 points which shows that the movie passes the cultural test which therefore is classified as a British film.

SkyFall
The finance which is the money they got from the production companies such as Eon productions and Metro-Goldwynn-Mayer.
The cultural test for the movie "Skyfall" is 21 out of 31 score which also passed the cultural test.

5) What is the main problem for the British film industry?
The main problem for the British film industry is that everytime when a British film is produced, the film makers will need to sell their film to a distribution company which is sacrificing the distribution rights. When the movie is released into the mainstream, the overall revenue made will be lost and won't be reinvested back into the British film.

6) What are three of the strengths of the British film industry?
The three strengths of the British film industry are;
  • every British films take 5% of the world box-office takings which is significant for a small nation that is trying to become popular with its film productions.
  • they have outstanding facilities such as camera companies and post production houses which all attract many film makers in the UK but especially in the USA.
  • they have many talented practitioners that are capable of creating wonderful and professional movies that will bound to be successful.

7) What are the two options for the future of the British film industry?
The British film industry don't have film making institution that can help them with the financing of production, distribution and exhibition. So the option would be for them to rely upon a co-production company in America but this would be involve drawbacks for the British film industry.
Their second option would be for the British film industry to start creating low-budget films so that the production of the film would cost little. But however, there are still drawbacks with how the low budget film is likely to make low profit too once its exhibited.
8) In your opinion, which of these two options would best safeguard the future of the British film industry?
In my opinion, I think the second option is a better option for the British film industry because making a low-budget film is cheaper with production but however, when exhibiting the film, it is not entirely certain that the movie won't be as successful to make higher profit than their budget. It depends on how good the movie is.

Research

2) Write an analysis of this BFI Film Festival programme front cover. How many of the 12 key conventions of magazine covers can you see? In what way does this print product differ from a traditional magazine cover? How have the designers made this programme visually interesting?

In the image, I can see a bit of key conventions of magazine covers such as;
  • The Masthead - this is the main title of the magazine which is "BFI London Film Festival" which is written in huge blocks
  • Pugs - this is the 3 words in the circles on the top right of the book which is placed there to seek attention. It is like a logo to make it appealing to the consumers.
  • Box-out - this is the title that is coloured in variety of different colours which is used to appeal to consumers.
Moreover, this print advert differs from a traditional magazine cover because it doesn't have many key conventions of a magazine. Mainly, in magazines, there would be social media links and etc but in this print advert, it's more dull and not interacting. But however, in a way, it is interesting and versatile. The way the designers made this print advert visually interesting is that the use of different colours on the big block of words on the title is what attracts many consumers. Also, with it's lack of use of key conventions of a magazine, it makes it versatile and it's interesting with the layout of it.

3) Find at least 5 arts centre or cinema programmes/brochures aimed at a similar target audience to your project (art house cinema). For each one, pick out one design idea that you could use in your own print work.

1) This Arts magazine design seems very interesting as it as many texts layed out on it. Also, with the images, there are 2 certainly with the main image of the art work and also, we see another small picture which shows individuals with the amazing shot. Moreover, with the texts, there are so many texts layed out everywhere on the Arts magazine cover which every consumers are going to be appealed by with the bubble writings and different use of colours. Lastly, with the design idea that I find very interesting and could use for my print work is the use of the bubble writings and the use of different colours to not make it dull but make it more eye-catching.

2) With this magazine design, it looks more simple and "high class" with the sketchy and professional look. The fonts of the texts look more professional and neat as well. Moreover, with the design that I found very attractive was the way the texts are layed out. Most of them are layed out on one side which I think I may do for my print work.
Image result for arts magazine
3) This Arts magazine is a very appealing and intriguing magazine due to its layout of the texts as well as the edited pictures.  The design in this magazine cover that appeals to me the most is the way tets are layed out with the size and the style. The main title is very significantly huge compared to the other irrelevant texts which is to show that the title is the main focus as well as the main image.

Image result for arts magazine

4) This is another arts magazine front cover which shoes great use of colours, texts and images to make the magazine cover look amazing. Firstly, it includes some of the key conventions of a magazine front cover which is something that is positive. Also, it may not be a similar target audience to our film but the designs of this magazine front cover is really appealing. The use of different colours makes he magazine cover look very colourful and glamorous which brings in the consumers. Also, the use of more than 1 pictures of individuals is a great combination for the consumers to relate with

Image result for arts magazine
5) This last magazine cover that I will analyse is also a Arts magazine. The appealing design of this magazine is that it looks more professional and neat. Also, it has some of the conventions of what a magazine cover should have. For example, it has the title of the magazine which is the second main focus for the consumers to look at. Also, there is a central image which is of a little girl which appeals to some consumers as there is only one invidividual and some consumers can relate with how she looks or anything else. This may be targeted at a similar audience to ours as there is a little girl as a central image which we also have. Also, she doesn't seem that satsfied which our lead character will also not look.

4) Find at least 5 contents pages from arts programmes or magazines. How are contents pages designed? How do they use a combination of text and images to create an effective design?
Image result for arts content magazine
 1) The first content page I want to analyse is the arts magazine content page which looks quite intriguing due to the amount of texts and images on it. Also, with how the layout is. Firstly, the content involves page and topic names which appeals to the consumers as the whole part of the content page is to let consumers know where is in what page. Also, with the images, it has many images that are in the magazine which is shown to give the consumers an insight of what the magazine could be about. Moreover, with the colour schemes, there seems to be only black and white without the images which is appealing because it is a consistent use of the two colours.

 2) The second magazine I would like to analyse is the Mendocino Arts magazine contents page. With this contents page, it is quite unique and versatile. Firstly, with the page numbers, it has the topic names beside it to let the consumers know where it where. Also, with the colour scheme, it doesn;t have many colours including the images which is quite dull but however, it makes the contents page look consistent and neat.

 3) The third content page that I would like to analyse is the Glamour Magazine content page. This content page in particular is designed to appeal to many consumers. With the colourful Masthead on the top, it immediately attracts consumers once they see the content page. Also, it has a central image which they immediately are appealed by. Lastly, with the contents, it has the page numbers in red colour and the names in black which makes it easier for the consumers to understand where is what page. Essentially, the use of different fonts of the title and the colours of the texts help to create an appealing design as well as the image of the attractive woman that many consumers will be attracted by.

3) The fourth content page that I have chosen to talk about is a magazine contents page. The design of this content page is somewhat appealing due to the colours, font types and images that are set on this content page. With the tet "Contents", it is written in big blocks of letters separately and the colour of it is white which makes it appealing to the consumers immediately due to the size of it. Also, the colour white is a stand out to the colour of the background. Also, with the features and contents, it is written in tiny letters and different fonts to make the other surroundings more significant and appealing to the consumers. Also, the fact that the features are written in different font type, it is trying to make the content page look more better. Moreover, the image of the attractive model is a central image of the content page which is there to attract many that are into fashion or anyone else because this magazine is mainly about fashion

4) The fifth content page I have chosen to analyse is the magazine content page. As clearly shown on the image, that the content page is white background and the front cover of the Magazine is where many images are. This shows the complete difference of the two. With the contents page, it certainly includes more text as it is a page where every information's are layed out. Moreover, with the tets, it is clearly seen that the font of the main title "Fashion" is a bold, heavy one which is the main appealing setting on the content page. With the different colours of the texts, it is certainly appealing to the consumers.

Focus group

Focus group was when our group and other groups sat down together and we received many feedback's on our original idea which changed some concept within our idea and also, we gave out our feedback's to the other group's ideas.

From the other groups, we retained a few ideas from the questions they asked us and the few questions and quotes were:
  • "Where you planning to film the car crash scene?"
  • "How would you display the car crash?"
  • "What would the lighting be like?"
  • "Would the most of the scene be flashbacks?"
  • "Is the flashback going to occur when the car crashes or in the hospital?"
  • "I wonder whether if it is worth making opening 3 minute rather than the ending 3 minute"
  • "Less dramatic but it would potentially be more engaging in terms of narrative"
  • "If you make the last 3 minutes, how will you communicate what's happened to your character?"
  • "Because most of the movie is going to show flashback, do you think you will be able to fit all the scenes in without it making sense?" .
From the focus group, the discussion certainly did help me and my group to reflect on our current idea and to know whether the current idea would be the strongest part of the 30 minute movie and whether it will approach the audience in terms of identification or understanding of the audience. Our original idea contained the ending 3 minute of the 30 minute movie and most of the clip, it would be flashback. The focus group discussion helped us to understand how the part we chose from the 30 minute movie was weak and had no understanding with the audience. With the audience, it wouldn't make sense to them and they wouldn't know anything about the characters.  For example, the quote "If you make the last 3 minute, how will you communicate what's happened to your character?", this question helped us to understand that our initial idea didn't involve much understanding of the narrative and the characters with the audience; the audience will just be confused and will be misled by the flashback. Moreover, the discussion will certainly impact our final product positively as we will take the ideas from the feedback's from the other groups to benefit ourselves with a better idea. It made us reflect on our initial idea and how it wouldn't be as appealing as the first 3 minute clip of the 30 minute movie even though it is less dramatic, it makes more sense with the characters and the audience will understand everything about the narrative and the character.
Moreover, the question "Where you planning to film the car crash scene?" was the question that affected us and our initial idea. We as a group didn't think of the location and how we are going to film a hard scene so from the question, we had to change our whole idea to another easier, less dramatic and more understandable idea which is the first 3 minute of the 30 minute movie.

The target audience for my and my group's final film production would be aged from 12 to 25 because in the brief, it said that our film production must not be over 15 British Board of Classification but our is below 15 which is suitable for our brief. Also, the reason why our film production will be would be suitable for 12 year old's and older is because due to the BBFC, we don't show any violence although our film production might include inappropriate language with the actors. Moreover, with the actors in our film, most of them are young but we have 1 older actor who is playing the mum of the main character and she is the one that doesn't remember her own daughter as her daughter is forgotten by everyone due to the narrative. Additionally, the idea that most of the actors are young is the reason why it would appeal to 12 and older because some of the young kids aged at 12 and older can relate to the problems that the main character is facing. It reflects real life events perhaps which the people can relate to. Also, our narrative helps to target a widespread audience from 12 to 25 approximately or older because many people can relate with the main character's problems that she is facing in the movie. Moreover, the gender classification for our film production would be approximately 60% female and 40% male. This is due to the main character being a female and is facing a huge forgotten problem where many other females can relate. Moreover, the lead character is a white female which reinforces the stereotype in the media of how white women are vulnerable and that is what our main character is within the film. She is isolated and vulnerable. Furthermore, with the social class, it would be targeted at all the people with different social classes because many from different social classes can relate to the problems that the main character is facing. Moreover, it would be targeted at all ethnicity due to the problems of the main character which is relatable to many in different races. Lastly, our target audience may have interests such as solving mysteries or watching Sci-Fi films because our film is about mysteries and is a Sci-Fi genre.

Arthouse film institution research

Production: Independent film studios

1) Look back at the five films you have analysed for your existing product research. Find which studios made them – e.g. Film Four, Studio Canal, BFI, BBC Films etc.

  • It follows - Northern Lights films
  • Girlhood - Canal
  • Donnie Darko - Flower Films
  • Boyz n the hood - Columbia Pictures
  • United 93 - Studio Canal

2) What other films do these studios produce? Can you find any any other independent, arthouse or low-budget examples?

  • Northern Lights Films - The golden compass
  • Flower Films - Never been kissed
  • Columbia pictures - The pursuit of Happyness
  • Studio Canal - High Rise

3) Do the studios have any notable successes? What is the most successful low-budget or independent film the studio has released?

  • Northern lights - It follows
  • Flower Films - Donnie Darko
  • Columbia pictures - 2012
  • Studio Canal - Macbeth

Distribution: Independent film distributors

2) Summarise the 10 steps of film distribution in a list using your own words.
The 10 steps of film distribution is a very long method as there has to be directors, producers, editors and etc. Certainly, the film at first must be planned and the filmed which would take years to finish due to the right technologies being used and no corruption within actions. Also, then the movie will need to be edited by the editor being supervised by the director into what need to done. Then once the movie is edited, the BBFC will rate and classify the movie before it is distributed into the mainstream cinemas like Vue.

3) Now research the distributors for each of the arthouse films you have analysed for your existing product research. Who distributed each film in the UK?
The distributors for the movie "It follows" are Dimension films and The Weinstein Company. Moreover, Icon Film Distribution distributed the film in the UK.
For the movie "Girlhood", the distributor is Pyramide Distribution. Also, the distributor that distributed this film in the UK was Studio Canal.
The movie "Donnie Darko", the distributor are Newmarket films, Pandora Cinema and United Artists. In the UK, the distributor was the Metrodome Distribution company.

The distribution company for Boyz N the hood is Columbia pictures. Moreover, the Uk distributor is the Columbia Tristar Home entertainment.
The distributors of United 93 are Universal studios, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and United International pictures. Furthermore, the distributor who distributed this film to the UK is the Columbia Tristar Home entertainment.

5) How much money did each film make? Did it make a profit against the budget?
The movie "It follows" made up to 20.6 million dollars gross profit worldwide. The budget of the film was 2 million which meant that they made a huge amount of profit

The movie "Girlhood" made a gross profit up to only 1.7 million dollars. With the budget, I wasn't able to find the estimated budget of the film.

The movie "Donnie Darko" had a budget of 4.5 million dollars estimated. And with their gross profit worldwide, they made 1.2 million dollars which is significantly lower than their budget meaning they didn't make ideal profit.

The movie "Boyz N the hood" budget was 6.5 million and their gross profit worldwide made was 57 million dollars which is a staggering amount with a low budget. It totally shows that the movie succeeded in the mainstream screenings such as vue and how much profit they made.

The movie "United 93" budget was a huge amount with an estimated 15 million dollars. With their gross profit that they made worldwide, was 76 million dollars estimated which goes against their budget as they made more profit.

6) Research Curzon Artificial Eye. Who are they and what do they do?
Curzon Artificial eye are an organisation that are UK's leading independant film distributors. They release critical acclaimed films to their discerned and enlgihtened UK audience. Also, these films are directed by many great directors in the world which makes the films more appealing.

6) Look at the Curzon Artficial Eye YouTube channelWatch three trailers for recent or upcoming independent films and identify something you can learn from each film to use in your own film production.
1) With this movie trailer called "Valley of Love", I certainly consumed some amazing ideas from it which me and the group could discuss about whether to gather these ideas and perhaps use it to make our film more appealing and better. Firstly, with the shots, I thought that the variation of different shot types and angles immediately caught my eye. I immediately was appealed by the shot types and the shot angles within the movie trailer and it certainly makes the movie look more interesting and less dull. Also, with the sound within the movie trailer, there was a continuous non-diegetic sound of anxiety build sound which we could use in our final production to make our scenes more dramatic and enthusiastic.

 2) This movie is called "Things to come". Within the trailer, it has many ideal and creative concept, editing and etc in it. But the lighting withn the movie trailer seem to be have appealed to me a lot. It is because the lighting is mainly high key which is the same as our idea for our final production but however, they also add up a little of low key lighting in the movie trailer which we as a group can think about. It can make scenes dramatic

3) With this movie trailer, the name of it is "The unknown girl" which has a link with our idea for our final film production's narrative. We have a girl that is forgotten by everyone and she is then unknown and left by herself. However, with the ideas that I have picked up within the movie trailer, the shot type is what appealed to me as there were many shot types such as the over the shoulder shot and also with the angle of the shots. They were very appealing to me and it an help us with our final film production as it gives us an insight of the variation and amount of shot types and angles we should use in our final film production in order for our film to turn out amazing.

Exhibition: Arthouse cinemas

Find some London-based arthouse cinemas and research the following:

1) What is the name of the cinema? Where is it?
Name: The Everyman Cinema    Location: Canary Wharf

2) What type of films do they show? What films are on this week? How do their programmes differ from the major cinema chains like Vue?
They mainly show arthouse films but are also showing films that are not in the arthouse category such as star wars: rogue one and Doctor Strange. From this, they are trying reach a wider audience so more people will start coming to the cinema. Movies such as A monster calls and Silence are on this week. The programmes differ from the major cinema chains like Vue as The Everyman cinema tend to mainly show arthouse films whereas Vue tend to show many movies that are mainstream which leads to more audience target.

3) What type of audience attends this kind of arthouse cinemas? Are there any clues on the website regarding the target audience? How can you tell?
The type of audience that attends this kind of arthouse cinemas like The Everyman is elderly people which is older generation as many movies in this arthouse cinema are rated over 15. This would be aimed at more middle and upper-class audience with good income a week. Also, they target people that are certainly into arthouse films.

A case study in independent film production: Film London and Microwave Film

1) What is Film London and why does it exist?
Film London is a company that is supported by Mayor of London. They exist as their purpose is to promote the culture in London by creating it and investing in it. Also, they want to help the young people with potential to become popular and famous stars in London.

2) What is the purpose of Microwave Film?
The purpose of Microwave film is to promote and help young and emerging talents. Also, they want to help and develop shortlisted projects that young or anyone make. Lastly, they want people to establish the film industry.

3) What is the London Calling project for Film London and how does it encourage independent filmmaking?
London calling projects is about convincing and trying to help the young and talented emerging film makers into creating better and more professional movies. They provide them with the right equipments that are essential to create a good movie. It motivates other independant filmmakers to create better films.

4) Choose three feature films funded by Microwave Film and embed their trailers in your blog. For each film, explain why it fits the profile for an arthouse or independent film and what target audience the film might attract.
1) This movie trailer is from the movie "Lilting". This movie is all about a male character's death who was the son of the character "Junn" and the boyfriend of the character "Richard". When the death of the son happens, the character richard reaches out to his mother to speak about her son (his long-term partner). Unfortunately, hs mother couldn't speak English which made the communication between the two a challenge and difficult. So Richard brings a translator to communicate with his partner's mother which he hadn't met whilst his partner was alive. This movie fits the profile for an arthouse as the movie's budget was only 120,000 GBP which is a really low amount in comparison to other mainstream movies. This makes it arthouse because arthouse films tend to be low budget and tend to target little audience rather than many. Also, the movie includes foreign language which is quite artistic which also fits the profile for an arthouse.

 2) Ill Manors movie is about 6 characters who are finding it very hard to cope with reality such as violence and are finding it to survive in the streets of the urban and violent London. Also, in this there is the main protagonist who plays the role of a good person that is trying to solve all the issues with everyone and in London. I think ill Manors fits the profile of Arthouse because it reflects real events that happen quite a lot in the real world. So essentially, it is reflecting those people who find it hard to survive in the streets. Also, this is what makes the movie look artistic as the whole movie was created to reflect the real life issues that happen to many people.

3) This movie trailer is from the movie "Shifty" which is essentially about a young crack cocaine dealer that sees his life go out of control and with his friend, being with him always, also gets involved with the problem. One customer is stalking the 2 friends and is looking to hunt down the characters. This movie fits the profile of arthouse as the setting of it is very urban as well as with the accent, its cultural in UK. Moreover, this movie also shows the real life events that happen mostly everytime with individuals that are involved in these type of situations.

5) Watch these top tips for film production. List three things you've learned from these short videos that you can apply to your MEST2 production work.
  • With the tips for film production, there were many such as including the audience. With making a low budget film, the audience is the main priority and must be thought about from the beginning and till the end. They are the ones that your stories are intended towards and they are the ones that going to watch your film. From the beginning, think about what audience group your movie is intended to and who they Also, thinking about the audience from the start will help the narrative of the movie become better as you will know what audience group you are intending the story to and who you are communication it to.
  • Secondly, every low budget movies must be planned with the script, shot list, casting and location. I have learnt that the planning of a movie before the production part helps them to clearly know what to do, where to shoot it and what storyline it is.
